From the grassroots
of Soweto to
world stages.
Michael Kgotso Aphane is a South African-born visual artist, director, and tech architect, widely recognized for his distinct storytelling lens and cultural impact under the moniker Maverick Seizure. Emerging from Soweto, Aphane began his photography journey in 2017, driven by an instinctive eye for narrative, identity, and aspiration.
Over the past nine years, he has built a reputation as one of the most compelling visual storytellers of his generation — capturing and collaborating with some of South Africa's most influential cultural figures, including the late AKA, among many others. His work quickly transcended local recognition, positioning him within global creative circuits.
A defining chapter in his career saw him expand internationally through work alongside Dreamville, touring across Europe with artists such as Bas and J. Cole. This momentum led to an invitation to North Carolina, where he gained rare backstage access to a major live production headlined by Drake — an experience that not only allowed him to document one of the world's biggest artists firsthand, but also deepened his creative proximity to the Dreamville ecosystem. These moments marked a turning point, expanding both his global reach and his ability to operate within elite creative environments.
Beyond photography, Aphane has evolved into a multidisciplinary director and creative strategist, contributing to high-impact projects including documentary work with Mixmag, where he crafted visual narratives around leading electronic artists such as Mochakk, as well as recent work documenting Desiree's reinterpretation of Nina Simone's legacy. His work consistently bridges music, identity, and storytelling across continents.
He is the founder of ZeZe Global, a next-generation production and creative technology company. Under his leadership, ZeZe Global is redefining how content is created, distributed, and monetized — blending high-end production with emerging technologies. As both a creative director and tech architect, Aphane is actively building systems that empower artists and creatives to operate at global scale with greater control and ownership.
